Hiding Behind AI: How SHA Was Used to Load Health System Costs Onto Poorest

A Kenyan health insurance system, SHA, uses an AI algorithm to determine premiums based on individuals' living conditions and lifestyle. However, the system has been found to overcharge the poorest and undercharge the richest. The AI algorithm overestimates the earnings of the poorest and underestimates the earnings of the richest, leading to unequal healthcare costs. A report has highlighted the issue, suggesting that the system was designed to prioritize the interests of the wealthy over those of the poor.
